Jeremy April '05 Memorial Scholarship Recipients

2006-2007 April Scholar: Kate Colantuono '09

Kate, like Jeremy, is both a scholar and athlete. While at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Sudbury, Massachusetts, Kate committed to both varsity soccer and track with the latter taking her to the 2005 state divisional DCL championships. At Union, Kate is a mathematics major and has been honored by inclusion on the Union College 2005-2006 Dean's list. This past year, Kate exhibited her prints at the Steinmetz Symposium. She competed successfully as a member of the Union College Woman's Indoor Track Team where her events are High Jump and Long Jump.

2004-2005 & 2005-2006 April Scholar: Sara Nash '08

Sara is from Clifton Park, New York, and a graduate of Catholic Central High School, Troy, NY. In addition to the Jeremy April Memorial Scholarship, she is also the recipient of a New York State Board of Regents scholarship as well as a Dean's Scholarship from Union College. Like Jeremy, Sara is a mathematics major at Union.

2003-2004 April Scholar: Daniel G. Wardwell '06

2002-2003 April Scholar: Sarah Peach '03

Sarah is a mathematics major from Cranston, Rhode Island. She is also the recipient of a President Scholarship from Union College. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, treasurer of the campus chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program and is active in campus Protestant Ministry. Sara also is a member of the varsity track team.

Coincidently, Sara was a classmate of Jeremy in mathematics.

Jeremy April Fund
for Teen Depression

Donations may be made to the Jeremy April Fund, part of an existing fund for research and demonstration services focusing on early detection of suicidal adolescents, through school based screening.

The project is in the Columbia University Department of Child Psychiatry. The chair of the department and the major player in this effort is Dr. David Shaffer, the world expert on teenage suicide, its epidemiology and attempts at early diagnosis and prevention.

  On behalf of the Department of Child Psychiatry, I would like to thank you for the very generous donation that you gave in Jeremy April's memory. The Aprils have met with a number of people who are working with suicidal adolescents at Columbia. They have decided to establish an Internet-based bulletin board with links to sites that are used by teenagers. The bulletin board would focus on questions of depression and suicidality and will include ways for youngsters to assess themselves. It will provide information on treatment.
  
  We will hire a professional who will review the bulletin board daily. In the event that any new message suggests the presence of a significant clinical problem, we will use a variety of approaches to make contact with the Internet user to offer them advice or help. We plan to start all of this in the fall, and we will correspond with you later in this year, or sometime next year, to give you details of the program that we have made.
  
  Once again, many thanks for your contribution. We hope that your generosity can be used to save some young person's life.
